Dubuque

Last time I posted, I alluded to a new journey that we were embarking. After a crazy summer getting here and getting adjusted, we are now settled in Dubuque. Overall I think that the change has been good. The pace of life here is different. Things roll a little slower, and we spend much more time as a family. The kids have made lots of friends in the neighborhood, and love having the freedom to take off on their scooters. We are still in the process of getting the house furnished, and the kids rooms set up. Of course, I want to make so many changes, but Im using restraint and piecing things together. The view off the back of the home is the incredible and we have all enjoyed watching the golfers. Joe seems to enjoy the practice here as well. Its been pretty easy for him and I know he is seeking out more of a challenge.

Big Changes

Who could possibly believe that their have been such big changes over the past 2 years? Life has kept us all happy and healthy and for that we are extremely grateful. We have limitless possibilities that lay ahead, and like always are trying to enjoy the journey as we go through our day to day activities. Joe and I made the decision to move to Dubuque this summer. We will wait until the kids are out of school and pack up and head east. It is with mixed emotions that I go, but giving the kids the life that we so desire for them was paramount in our decision. So off we go.....a new home, new friends, new dance and sports teams, but same family support and love. I keep telling myself that it is only three hours away, but both Joe and I are acutely aware that life will be forever changed. I have enjoyed every minute living so close to our family but anyone who knows me well, realizes that I am always up for an adventure. I dont know if Dubuque will be forever and ever amen, or just a pit stop on our way to a new reality, but I do know that we will make the best of it! We found a home that will work, big enough for us, but not overwhelming. The neighborhood seemed nice, and kid friendly. I will share pictures as I gather them. This blog will now live to see another day, and chronicle our journey east!

Getting back to it

I realize that keeping an online journal is only going to work if I actually add to it! Oh well, live goes on, kids grow and I stay more than busy as always. Things are good, school is winding down, projects are finishing up, vacations are in the works. I cant ask for much more, and thats a pretty good place to be.

TN Bound!

By this time tomorrow we will be on the road for MEMPHIS! I am excited and feel pretty organized and ready to take off. The one road bump is just that we have to take the dogs to be boarded first thing in the AM which prevents me from packing the back of the Infiniti. I have gotten the front all set & ready. I'm just about to start making some cookies for the road. Who doesn't want a little taste of home in a forign place?

While cleaning out my things the other day I found an old MP3 player I had when Jet was a baby. My girls and I had all the same songs programed on ours (I think we even had matching MP3s but I cant be certain). Anyway, isn't it so amazing how a song can trigger a memory? I was listening to a lot of the R & B that was on it and I was almost transported back into another time in my life. I remembered things I never have and laughed about things I hadn't though of in ages. I am still listening to it today....

Well I better head into the kitchen! Cookies to make!

Still here

So, it appears that I have taken a little break from blogging. But I am back. With Jack about to begin preschool I am going to have more time to document life. I made a decision that I will live life instead of taking time away from living to prepare for or document life. But in all honesty this is my journal, and I would like to have it to look back on as the kiddos grow and change.

Last night was the start of High School football here in Central Iowa. We headed out to watch the Waukee Warriors play Ankeny. Even though Waukee lost we all had a good time and I can tell that Jet is absorbing every little bit of information he can. He loves football.

Other than that we have been busy packing and getting ready for a road trip! A little overwhelming to me to think of traveling 10 hours with the kiddos, but hopefully everything will go smoothly.

I spend a decent amount of time in Memphis because I dated a boy who lived there doing an intership. We will see how much I really remember. My fondest memry was that he worked in a fabulous shoe store at night and would send my several pairs a week.....what a great guy! Anyway, I doubt much show shopping will be happening but we will be heading to the zoo, childrens museum and other fun activities while Joey sits in class learning how to save lives more quickly and efficently.

I will post with recent pics and stories from the road!

Jenica

We have had an eventful 24 hours here in Urbandale. As you know, Jenica has been sick on and off for the past month (all of our kids have been). I took her to her pediatrician yesterday to bascially just reassure me that she was fine. She has no fever, cough, runny nose or anything. She has been waking up in the middle of the night and vomiting, and as a total over-reacter that I am, I took her to get checked out.

Long story short- there is a possibility that Jenica has a brain tumor that is causing pressure in her brain and causing her to vomit- only at night.

I cant even begin to tell you how I am feeling- because I honestly dont know. I feel on one hand like they are just over-reacting. Medicine is so complex....how can they just examine her quickly and say something like that?

On the other hand, I am devestated. I dont think their is a worse more out of control feeling than to have a sick child. I go back and forth in between believeing that everything is fine, and this is all a fluke, and having a mini panic attack at the thought of her being sick.

As a mother, I know that this has forever changed me. I am different. Even if all is well, and we live to have 3 healthy, amazing, grown children I will never forget this feeling. I understand a tiny sliver of what it would be to have a sick child, and will make a commitment to myself to help families that are affected by illness of a child more. There are plenty of organizations that head up efforts, and i will help whenever i am able.

We have a MRI scheduled on Monday the 27th- Joey and I have been calling multiple hospitals to have this date moved up. It looks as if we will head to the University of Iowa Hospital to have the MRI done. They are some of the leaders in the country with neurological diagnosis and treatment. They have also gone way out of their way to accomidate Jenica, and do as much leg work as possible to have her seen ASAP and get us answers to our questions. I will post more as soon as I know more. Right now we are just focusing on a healthy Jenica, with no more troubling episodes.

TAX DAY

"You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it."

Dr. Adrian Rogers, 1931

On this tax day- as my father in law is joining the tea party, as I sign a check for $30,000 worth of "unexpected" taxes (above and beyond what we have already paid) and as I look into the future and what it will mean to my children, I am troubled.

This isnt about me being heartless, or not being compassionate- its about spending more then we have. I have already learned this lesson in my personal life- we dont live on credit, heck we dont even have credit cards- we pay our bills, we dont expect others to care for us. We dont spend more than we have......why in the world is the government ignoring this lesson that we have all learned? Im not finger pointing....I could care less about who or what is to blame- I just know that it has to stop.

Joey sat in the ER with Jenica for 4 hours last night and never was seen. Can you imagine as a parent how frustrating this is? A 3 year old in major pain- vomiting, crying, being left in the lobby for that amount of time? The scariest thought is if health care did get socialized. Our access to medical care would be non existent. TRUST ME ON THIS ONE. Its a certainty. I had Joey ask before he left if there was some reason that they were running so behind. The nurses answer was that this is typical- they didnt have any major trauma or anything- just a lot of people who get free healthcare clogging up the system. Its totally inexcusable. Its exhausting. Frankly, its scary.

Ive been busy....

Nice excuse I know- but things quickly spiral into an uncontrollable craziness that makes blogging seem like the last thing on a never-ending list of things that wont get done. Things here are fine. Lots going on, tons of business decisions constantly being made, struggles between family and work, and finding harmony amongst it all has been taking a lot of time. We have been spending a lot of time trying to financially capitalize on the recession. Its a great time to by tax properties so that has kept us busy in anticipation of June 1.
From the outside Im sure it appears that Joey and I are just fumbling around, trying to juggle everything. Not to say that isnt occasionally the case, but for the most part we are extremely goal orientated. Which makes everyday decisions get kinda complex. I know I lost you there- Ill explain. Joey and I have big plans....BIG plans. Plans that involve him retiring from medicine, selling everything that we own and leaving the US. I know that it may sound like a crazy idea, but we want to simplify. Dont get me wrong, our home is lovely, I love that we have 3 cars, and I can hop into the Hummer when I get bored of the Infiniti. But its just STUFF, and it turns out that its not us owning our stuff, its our stuff owning us. The sheer expense of the upkeep, the mental space that is occupied by the care of luxury items is huge. So when it comes to decisions about putting in a pool playground, etc, etc, I am totally at a loss. Do we live for now, or do we life for the future? I know there is a happy medium, but I havent found it yet. Help please ! =)

Anyway- in exciting news....my sister had TWIN girls 2 weeks ago! Yea! I am an Aunt again! I love it and hope to meet them soon. They are beautiful.

School here is wrapping up, and I am trying to plan a few vacations for Joey and I to get away. It has been a crazy year (what year hasnt??) and although it seems like we travel a lot, its never just for the fun of it. It always involves work. With airfare soooo cheap right now I am kidnapping him off to some where relaxing and tropical. It will feel good to remember that I am married. We just dont have the time we would like to spend together. He is super busy with work, and when he has a break he is at the gym with beau at least 6xs a week. Speaking of health, I am running a marathon this weekend.....that ends in a mud pit- doesnt that sound like so much fun???? I am pumped. I am also thinking about running the dam to dam 20K. We will see- I have a ways to go before I can run that and not die, but I have 6 weeks to prep- so its possible.

Easter was good- we have had a month solid of sick kids at our house, and Easter was no exception, but even though it was quiet we had a blast. I think for the first day in over a month all of the kids are feeling good, and back to normal! Yea! I love spring!

Im still kicking!

So I know that I have been absent from writing for quite some time- but no time for apologies- just back to work!

Since I have lasted posted- the holidays have come and gone- (they were awesome) we have had many fun family times, and Joey and I were able to get away to Florida for a little Hawkeye Bowl game fun. We stayed in Clearwater Beach- our hotel was right on the beach, and we had 3 balconies that looked over the ocean. I can honestly say I havent felt that relaxed and at peace since I became a Mom. Not that motherhood is so overly stressful- just that I havent been able to just let go, and trust the kids are fine. But I did this time......and it was great. Definitely a do-over.

I am also working full time again. I really like being out of the house and solving real world problems, but I miss the kiddos. It has been topped off by the fact that all 3 of them have been under the weather to varying degrees which has caused and ample amount of anxiety that I am not able to be at home watching their every move. Not like the kids are neglected- the have their Papa watching them in the AM, and Haylee takes over from 1-6 so I know they are pampered all day long.

Being a working Mom is not as easy as I thought it was- but I totally understand the need to use your brain- and I am looking forward to doing more when Jack heads off to preschool. I cant ever imagine working for someone else- but I know that in time I will develop a career, and that in and of itself excites me. Working for yourself is much harder then just having a boss and getting a paycheck- but it has its perks. This morning I was running about 5 minutes behind and told Joey I was worried about being a few minutes late to the morning huddle with all the girls. He just looked at me and laughed and said "its a good thing you own the company". Oh well- at least I know I have job security.....now if only I could get paid =)

A PERFECT DAY!!!

Haylee (our nanny) feeling Jack dinner

Aunt Jennie and chole the puppy- Jack LOVES animals!
The boys (minus football playing-too busy to stop and take a picture Jettie)
Carving pumpkins with Grandma
Hayrack ride!
Jet bobbing for apples
Jenica with her new found corn
Jack pulling Grndpa Art around the farm

Jackers is ONE!

So we have had a great week at Casa de Solinger. Jack turned one on Wed. We had the famiy over (again) for pizza and cake to celebrate. The little guy loved the attention and the ribbons from his packages. A great time!

Then on Thursday, we celebrated my Moms birthday! I took my mom and gee-gee out to Urban Grill for a girls lunch, then Mom came over for a mini party that night while we answered the door for trick-or-treaters!

The big kids headed to Altoona with Joey for trick or treat there (a family tradition). They met up with their cousin Jackie and had a ball going around Joe and Beckys neighborhood. Apparently they wouldnt go to any houses with Obama signs.....Jenny and Joey had the kids convinenced that those people would take their hard earned candy and distribute it to all the kids that decided not to dress up or put the effort into the holiday!! LOL!! They came home sound asleep and the next morning were still buzzing about the "really scary house" at breakfast.

Friday was another busy day and Jack had his 1 year shots. Oh it was horrible. I have decided to abandon modern medicine.....it just seems like torture to me. Our nanny Haylee was with me for the appt. and we both decided that not only the treatment of Jack, but the judgemental attitude (since I would not give Jack a flu shot) was too much to take, and I will be in search of a practice that is more in line with my philosophy. I am not an idiot, I know all about the flu shot- and I certainly dont need a lecture when I decide not to give it to MY child. UGH..... Firday night I got some bad news that Gee-Gee was hospitalized with Pneumonia. I had just enjoyed her company on Wed, and Thurs. She was fine so I was really suprised that it came on this quickly. She is stable and the staff at Mercy is taking good care of her =)

Today we headed out to Solingers Farm for a Bonfire. It was a blast. The weather here is gorgeous and the kids had an amazing time with all of their cousins. There was a hayrack ride, pumpkin carving, bobbing for apples, and scary walk in the woods (complete with Joey and Jeff jumping out the cornfields and making the kids crap their pants). Grandma and Grandpa live out in the country on a beautiful piece of land, and the stars were so bright out there. I just love Iowa. Im sure Im considered simple by modern standards, but there isnt anything better in my opinion then being out in nature surrounded by your family. I am extremely blessed to have married into such a warm group of people. The love that they have for each other, and the closeness between everyone is rare to find. It is so evident that they are a family, and the love is unconditional. Its a really laid back, relaxing atmosphere where there is always an Aunt of Uncle around to rock the baby- or a cousin to wrestle with. I loved living in Florida, and have often thought about moving from here someday, but when I am surrounded with my family it reminds me that although I love to travel, that Iowa is where I belong. As Joeys would say- "Im a simpleton".

SO these are some more pictures of my babies at trunk or treat. The last two pictures are not of a UFO (although I admit it looks possible). I put them on here for my sister, who lives in Florida, and will miss this amazingly peaceful, beautiful scene this fall. This is the sight we saw coming home tonight. First let me say that we dont live in a cornfield, but in Iowa you can live in the middle of a city and just a few blocks from you could be a field. We live on the outskirts of town but this was the first time this fall i had seen it- my favorite thing....I wait all year. if you dont know what Im talking about...then you have for sure, never lived in Iowa. Its a combine, late at night harvesting the corn that will soon be used to fuel our country, our tummies, our livestocks tummie, and our cars. It is nothing short of absolute beauty to me. Enjoy.....

Trunk or Treat

Every year MCH (the kiddo school) hosts their trunk or treat celebration. A bunch of parents gather in the parking lot and open their tailgates, decorate them like crazy and hand out candy. Last year Mom took the kids since I was in the hospital giving birth =). This year we all went- and it was FREEZING but quick....so not so bad. It was fun for me to see them trick or treat, since I am usually at home answering the door. Jenica was the funniest this year- she really took on the persona of a true princess, even telling jack that he is an angel (typical non-princess Jenica behavior would be to bite him). We stopped at my parents house on the way home. The kids always trick or treat in Joey paents neighborhood (a long standing tradition =)) and so it was the perfect opportunity for my parents to sugar them up!

Oh and as a fun kickback from about 20 suckers before bed.....its now 5:07 am, and Ive been up with the babies since 2:30.......fun times!! Jenica had a nightmare (sugar induced Im sure, and once we got her upstairs to calm her down, Jack decided he didnt want to miss the party. Oh well.....I got to catch up on a little email, watch a few infomercials and enjoy the middle of the night instead of boringly sleeping through it. Gotta love it!

The Party!

So we welcomed in Jacks birthday party with 60+ MPH sustained winds. It was crazy. I lost 2 balloon arrangements in the HyVee parking lot....Just flew away. Jack and I drove around for 20 minutes trying to recover them- but they were sadly gone- and we needed to get home to get things ready for the party =( We arrived home to see our huge blow up pumpkin in the front yard shredded. Ugh- I did manage to dave the McCain-Palin sign that we proudly display- so that was good. We got all ready and waited for the food to arrive...yummy!

We had an awesome party. The hight winds and a flu going around kept quite a few people home- but we are so greatful for the family and friends that braved the weather to come out. Jack loved his cake- but ate it nicely- no huge mess. He did love all of his toys and seemed genuinely pleased with all the attention! I love that little guy and it was a very warm feeling to be surrounded by close friends and family. We did miss both of our sisters who were not able to make it. It never quite seems complete with out them here. Anyway- great friends.....great food....great celebration!!!

HE IS ALMOST ONE!!

Here is a picture of our Jackie Joe!!

A sneak peek.......

Among all the craziness of Jacks 1st birthday celebration this weekend we got to see a few of our pictures from our holiday card session....and as always I LOVE THEM. Jamie does no wrong in my eyes- the pictures are so amazing as always. And the thing about them is- they may not be olan mills posed...and if they were I would hate them- they are about capturing our family- our vibe- our experiences and interactions. And Jamie does that flawlessly- everytime- without fail. That is true art to me- to put emotion into something that is otherwise flat, as a photograph could be if not looked at as art. But our photos are truly art (and you should see the 5 ft canvas hanging in our dining room to prove it). So I am post a few of them to show the spirit of the day.
